Touring Car Masters is a support series that runs in conjunction with Australia's V8 Supercars. Basically it's old muscle cars (mostly Mustangs, Camaros, and Falcons) making absurd horsepower (I've heard numbers as high as 700 hp), along with a smattering of old Porsches, all racing on the same tracks as the Supercars use. The cars may be classics but the drivers definitely aren't babying them out there, they want to win. It's great.
As an added bonus the series has been putting most of their races on their youtube channel this year. Screen grab from Sandown Race 1:

Oh. My. God.
Why can't all racing be like this?!?
![]() 10/07/2013 at 19:18 |

We need to do this here. I don't understand why Touring Car racing never took off in North America. Or if it did, it turned into NASCAR.

I was going to bed but now I MUST see if a '69 Camaro wins.
It has to, because the other cars pale by comparison (in my mind at least).

This is absolutely badass.
I wonder what other cars are eligible to compete. I'd love to take a V12 E-Type up against those V8 monsters. Not sure I can think of anything else I like that would stand a chance.

FUCK YES! An SS and not a Z/28 as well (I have an irrational love for the former and an irrational distaste for the latter - based entirely on how the badges and hoods look)! SCORE!
Not too sure about the blue wheels though; they're pretty tacky.

When I still had Speed, they would show the British Touring Series in the middle of the night.....I stayed up way too late too many times watching it and have no regrets about it at all!
![]() 10/07/2013 at 20:29 |

I wonder if they would get into stuff like the old british touring car championships with muscle cars vs. Mini's LOLOL that would be awesome here!!!!
![]() 10/07/2013 at 20:38 |

Where I race the minis compete in this class too. Theres a supercharged 1275 thats not far off through the corners but gets blown away on the straights. Usually finishes top 5 ish

Need more 70s Trans-Am-like racing in the US.
No idea why stuff like this isn't more popular. Most of the racing these days with modern cars is sterile, strategic, and boring. At least thats covered by media. Club level racing like whats in NASA or SCCA is also good stuff. With the the way the internet and video is these days, why are these events not televised on the net? geez.
That Stadium Truck street race video was an example of why watching hard-to-drive stuff is much more fun. F1 was awesome.. back when the cars were hard to control. Now its like watching slot cars. British Touring Car stuff seems to be good. But of course its like not televised over here.. Or not some centralized youtube channel.

an old GT-R (KPGC110 I think is the designation.) built to the same horsepower numbers maybe???

They get this and V8 Supercar.... and we get NASCAR. Guh.

ah damnit, I was rooting for that Torana.
There used to be a little yellow LJ XU1 in the series which I miss. It got pretty badly smashed at Bathurst a couple of years ago, and I don't remember seeing it back on the track after it got repaired.

Wowza! That Falcon Sprint is awesome! Blasphemer that I am, I've always liked the small-block underdogs more than the big-block brutes. An LS6 is cool, but if I could have any muscle car it would have to be something with a really high-strung solid-lifter smallblock screamer, like a Z/28 or a Boss 302 (or a Boss 351, how 'bout that!). Even a hi-po 289 stirs my fancy more than say, a 429 Cobra.

For a brief period of time there was a pretty decent effort in the Trans Am racing series, not too different from the footage here, sadly it turned into a silhouette-series.

I love watching NASCAR on road coarses. I think those are their best races.
Road course races are something with a storyline. Every lap tells something about what's happend and what is going to happen. It is just more envolving from a intelectual point of view.
Oval racing is great, but most of the time, the races are all about building some very cheap drama with those bunch of yellow flags.

Sweet Charger; wouldn't mind having 1 of those. Looks like a lot of fun, that series. The problem here in the US is all those pony cars get restored and then no one wants to run them in a race.....
![]() 10/07/2013 at 22:25 |

That is an extremely sexy car. Falcons look really mean with big tires and racing suspension. I like the "all business" 2-door sedan look, really clean and much more purposeful than some of the more overstyled cars of the era.

They are trying with the Pirelli World Challenge. Only issue is the coverage is crap and when the races do make it on TV they are 3 weeks old. Only online can you see it live. Some great racing and even better wrecks
![]() 10/07/2013 at 22:28 |

Damn, makes me homesick! This is the kind of racing that could get me out to a track, if only it wasn't taking place many thousands of miles from where I now live :-(

Great idea! Cranking it now.
![]() 10/07/2013 at 23:54 |

I think I know why: Because NASCAR is more popular with those who fund motorsports. What could be more exciting—from a corporate point of view—than 43 corporate logos in constant camera view? With corporate spokesperson drivers? Who cares about such trivia as the racing or cars themselves?
![]() 10/07/2013 at 23:58 |
|
Because SCCA Trans Am stopped being popular? Not being from NA I'm not really sure why though. Maybe it morphed into Grand Am or ALMS?
![]() 10/08/2013 at 00:08 |

Basically what you're saying is it's all about suspension travel. Watching the cars lean and dive makes everything more interesting even if they're going slowly.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 00:30 |

So how much Jim Beam gets drunk in Australia? I feel like the ad fits the competition pretty nicely.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 00:47 |

I'm speaking more along the lines of big horsepower, normal sized tires, no aero, no stability control and no traction control aside from the drivers right foot. Stuff with mass and isn't stuck to the road like glue via giant rocket-science level tires and enough downforce to kill a normal human being.
Drive as fast and hard as you can go. None of this team orders bs or fuel conservation. Pedal to the metal.

well i think nascar is around because of the bootlegging thing but i feel the reason it still around is because of the big money going into it. I'm sure it was like that then as well. anyway, big money likes to keep it that way

there are some bowel clenching scenes there. these cars in this type of race is absolutely insane

I go every year to Sandown for the 500 and I can tell you the TCM cars are way more exciting than the V8 supercars! Also I'm a sucker for old Fords :) Here's a shot from an earlier race in the day (Taken on a cell phone so apologies if quality is bad)

It's crazy to think but the DZ302 Z/28s made incredible drag cars too!! And the Boss 351 gets no respect! What a car.

here's the closest thing to that. Bathurst 1985.

That video is the one that made me love the XJS. There's something that's just right about one on wide rubber hossing it around a track.

V8's have some of the best supporting race series'. I saw a bunch when I was in Melbourne for the F1 race in 2010, absolutely fantastic.

Historic racing is always insane - mainly because you're expecting the drivers to treat them gently... they don't.
Would be great to see Minis, Lotus Cortinas or other European Touring cars up against these lot.

Your not alone my friend you were not alone. Shame they never advertised it more since I usually ended up watching it by accident on a Sat/Sun night.

The Boss 351 has all the practical drawbacks of the 71-73 Mustang, like really bad visibility all around, and an interior that is uncomfortable and feels cramped despite the exterior size. The Boss with its competition suspension also supposedly has a super-harsh ride but still so-so handling.
But who cares about that when you get the best iteration of the 351C ever, and a car that can and does regularly beat Hemis and an SD455s at the strip, all with much less displacement?

Ummm, I know I am late to this thread but I just stumbled upon this series while searching for V8 Touring Cars and didn't know about the Masters series....
Dear god this is the best racing happening on the planet. Just everything about it... Don't have words.
